Mr Light Blue (outside) will contest his 50th start at Doomben this Saturday
MR Light Blue will rack up his half-century and stablemate De Dozen Stars won't be far behind when they contest races at Doomben on Saturday. Trainer Barry Baldwin said the pair had pleased him and were genuine chances of racing well. Mr Light Blue will have his 50th start when he contests ths Makers Mark Open Hcp (2120m) in his final outing before a spell. His win at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions day showcased the gelding's ability when he held on after a tough front-running performance. "He'll go out after this race win, lose or draw but he's again proved a good moneyspinner this campaign," Baldwin said. "We were going to turn him out before this race but the nominations were down so we thought we'd keep him in work another week. He's done well." De Dozen Stars will have his 45th start in the Coke Zero Open Hcp (1200m) and Baldwin said the eight-year-old continued to perform well. "He just tries every race so he always gives himself a chance," Baldwin said. The trainer said he was conscious of managing the workload of the older horse, which has battled injury during its 10-win career. "You have to be different with these old horses," Baldwin said. "Once you get them fit, you have to keep them poking around. They can't take the work they did as three-year-olds. You have to give them enough work to keep them fit but not put too much pressure on them. And you keep taking them back to the races. "Once you turn them out, it can take a while to get them fit again - just like it would for an older man who had a break. "But this horse is a bit of a favourite of mine because he always gives his best." Baldwin was pleased with Flying Home, which ran on strongly in the Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) last week. The gelding will be aimed at a mile race in the city next week. |
