Flying Home will be set for the Bernborough Hcp at Toowoomba on New Year\'s Eve.

FLYING Home will be set for a hit-and-run mission at Barry Baldwin's old home track at Toowoomba after his return from a spell at Doomben this weekend.

Baldwin is aiming Flying Home for the $175,000 Listed Bernborough Handicap (1625m) when Toowoomba's grass track re-opens on New Year's Eve.

The son of Flying Spur is better known for getting over stayers' trips but Baldwin said he was very pleased with Flying Home.

"He was in career-best form at the end of his last preparation when he won three races in a row," Baldwin said.

"I have no reason to think he has gone backwards from there. He has come back quite nicely.

"The mile may not be thought of as his best distance but keep in mind that track climbs up the hill and makes for a testing mile."

Baldwin will wait until after the Bernborough Hcp before deciding on the rest of Flying Home's campaign. There is an option for the five-year-old to be rested ahead of a Brisbane winter campaign.

His consistent record will be tested upon his return at Doomben, carrying a big weight from a bad alley over the unsuitable 1200m of the Carlton Draught BM 85 Hcp.

Flying Home has not missed a place in his last nine starts, winning four of those, and has not finished further back than fourth in his last 12 starts.

"He's come back well and we've taken the claim with Aidan Holt so I hope he'll be running on at the end of this race," Baldwin said.

Baldwin also has Mr Light Blue entered in the opening event at Doomben against a familiar field of stayers.

"He missed a run because of the heavy track last start so it's been a month between runs for him," Baldwin said.

"But I still expect him to run well."
