FLYING Home will stay in Sydney for another shot at top prize after his close second at Warwick Farm.

Trainer Barry Baldwin decided to leave the son of Flying Spur south for a Benchmark 85 Hcp (2000m) at Rosehill on January 19 before he considers winter options for the emerging stayer.

Flying Home was an encouraging second to Award Season at Warwick Farm after overracing - an out-of-character trait for a horse that has usually settled well in his runs.

"That didn't help us at all and Award Season was too good for him in the end but I was encouraged at the margin back to the other horses," Baldwin said.

"He has to step up in grade for a Benchmark 85 but it will again give us a good idea of where he's at. If we want to target better races later in the year then we need to see him show something in these Sydney races."

Baldwin has a strong hand at Eagle Farm on Saturday, where he will saddle up some strong chances away from the spotlight of the Magic Millions carnival on the Gold Coast.

Baldwin said the Eagle Farm meeting would give him a good gauge on the progress of some of his runners including last-start winner Richenza and returning sprinter The Right One.
