Emerging stayer Flying Home in classy win
Emerging stayer Flying Home in classy win

   Glenn Davis  December 27, 2012

Loyalty is not a common trait in most sports these days but Ingham grazier, Tom Sheahan is an exception.

The partnership between Sheahan and Eagle Farm trainer Barry Baldwin goes back many years reaching great heights with their former star sprinter, Burdekin Blues, who won 11 of his 21 starts and more than $678,000 in prizemoney.

Sheahan and Baldwin were back in the winner's stall at Doomben last Saturday with promising four-year-old Flying Home who scored a last-to-first win in a 2200-metre Class Six Plate.

Flying Home, a son of Flying Spur, is a half-brother to the Anthony Cummings-trained Red Lord who was Group One placed in the 2007 South Australian Derby.

Red Lord also won at Group Three level in the 2009 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield in 2009.

"Tom has been a great supporter of mine. He bought Flying Home at the Sydney sales and took him back north to Ingham to break in," Baldwin said.

"Tom's son Patrick does most of his breaking in at their property, Valley Of Lagoons, near Ingham."

Flying Home was having only his ninth start and was stepping up to a middle distance for the first time when he notched up his second win of his career.

"When he first came to my stables I knew straight away he needed time," Baldwin said.

"But from the time I gave him his first gallop I knew he had a lot of ability."

Baldwin believes Flying Home won't have any trouble handling 2400 metres but is unsure of his immediate future.

"There's not much around for him presently but you can safely say he'll have no problem getting 2400 metres," Baldwin said.

"There's a slight chance we might take him to Sydney soon. It's not out of the question."

Sheahan and Baldwin also shared some memorable wins together with former flyer, Simplest, who won in excess of $261,000 in prizemoney with nine wins and as many placings from 32 starts.

"Simplest was a very fast horse but couldn't go much past 1100 metres," Baldwin said.

"Burdekin Blues was a great sprinter before injury ended his career. He's still winning but it's now on the show circuit."
