Glenn Davis October 8 2012 The unsung heroes of any racing stable is its staff. So when De Dozen Stars won the Kedron Wavell Services Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, Barry Baldwin knew who to single out for special praise. That person was Jamie Nielson. Nielsen spent the previous two weeks taking De Dozen Stars to Nudgee beach for daily exercise after he was a late scratching behind the barriers at his previous start. Nielsen trained privately for the powerful Patinack Farm stable and was the first to train a winner for Nathan Tinkler. However, things didn't quite work out for Nielsen who was replaced by John Thompson in 2010. Despite the setback in his training career, Nielsen copped the demotion professionally and stayed on working for Patinack Farm's Gold Coast operation for a short period before eventually going his own way. Nielsen learnt his trade working for 15 years as foreman for the late Eric Kirwan and trained top gallopers Heroism, Fetes Galante and Forgotten Hero early in their careers. He was also closely associated with former star galloper Brave Warrior who won the 1994 Magic Millions Classic and was five times placed at Group One level. Baldwin has nothing but praise for Nielsen's work ethic. "He's been a big help for me around the stables and is a tireless worker," Baldwin said. "No stable can function properly without good staff and I'm fortunate to have great staff with people like Jamie." Baldwin gave all the credit for De Dozens Stars' victory to Nielsen. "Jamie has done a great job looking after him and took him to the beach every day for two weeks before he won," Baldwin said. De Dozen Stars' win was the seven-year-old's sixth win of his career and his first over 1400 metres.
