Glenn Davis October 3 2012 Breeding buffs need to look no further than Barry Baldwin's youngster, Midway, making a good impression in his race debut at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Midway ran a good second in his only barrier trial over 800 metres at Doomben last month and has drawn perfectly in barrier two for the Timeform QTIS Two-year-old Handicap (1000m). Midway is a half brother to stablemate Saraji, a six times winner from 15 starts and a winner of more than $276,000 in prizemoney. The son of Excites is bred in the purple with his grand-dam, the Al Hareb mare Bethany, a producer of ten named foals, of which five have been successful on the racetrack. Bethany was a winner over 1200 metres and is a half-sister to former flyers Dynamic Love, Key Bar Nights as well as Baldwin's former topliner Arimathea and Grouse Lane, the dam of former top sprinter Princess Margaret. Baldwin concedes Midway faces stern opposition in his debut from topweight Whiskey Allround who scored a runaway win in the first two-year-old race of the season at Toowoomba last month. "I was happy enough with his barrier trial but I was fairly impressed by the winner (Outback Lightning)," Baldwin said. "He's got some development to do yet but he's a lot bigger than Saraji who was quite small as a two-year-old. "I'm happy the way he's going. He's got natural ability and I think he'll make a nice racehorse." Midway is owned by the O'Connor family, who also raced Saraji. Baldwin also is hopeful of a good performance from De Dozen Stars in the Kedron Wavell Services Handicap (1350m). The seven-year-old was a little scratchy in his action and was a late scratching behind the barriers at Doomben a fortnight ago. However, Baldwin's stable foreman Jamie Nielsen has been taking the seven-year-old to Nudgee beach and has fully overcome his minor problem. "He's on trial over the distance but he really appreciated going to the beach and he's a good eachway chance," Baldwin said.
