If patience is one of the ingredients for success, then the Palmer family deserve every reward that comes their way with Barry Baldwin's promising Run Royal Run.
Five-year-old Run Royal Run has had only seven starts during his career for three wins and as many placings and will be out to improve his record when he steps up to 1600 metres for the first time in the Racing Retro Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
The son of Royal Academy was bought for only $12,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions yearling sales by the late Ted Palmer who decided to race the youngster with family members.
However, tragedy struck when Run Royal Run broke his pelvis when he failed to finish on debut at Caloundra in January last year.
"Unfortunately, he cracked his pelvis and was pulled up at his first start," Baldwin said.
"He had to be locked up in the stalls for nine weeks and then he was locked away in his yard for another two months before we could send him out for a spell.
"Considering those early problems he shows a lot of promise and I'm not worried about him going to 1600 metres.
"He ran third first up over 1200 metres at the start of the month and then came out an won over 1350 metres at Doomben last start.
"He's got the makings of a good horse even though he only scrambled home last time."
Baldwin believes Run Royal Run could be in for his toughest test yet at Eagle Farm and rates the Brian Smith-trained Caellum as the main danger.
"Caellum looks to be a nice horse and is definitely our main danger," he said.
"Our plan with Run Royal Run is to step him up further in distance and I think he can keep improving and should be hard to beat on Saturday."
Run Royal Run, a Chris Munce mount, is closely related to Bevan Laming's former star two-year-old Ringa Ringa Rosie.
His grand-dam La Caissiere won six races during her career including the G2 Flight Stakes at Warwick Farm and Gr2 Wakeful Stakes at Flemington in 1983.
She also was runner-up to Look Aloft in the G1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm the following year.
